Weekly Wisdom | Affordability Czar

A New General Against Inflation

A theme of my writing and President Trump’s greatest challenge is the affordability crisis still plaguing Americans. As my recent article, “The Cost of Living Crisis, presented, the average working American doesn’t feel better off six months into the Trump administration. And inflation remains the culprit. On March 2nd, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent proposed an affordability council headed by an affordability czar. I highly endorse this idea.

Where things stand:

  1. As of this date, an affordability council with an affordability czar has NOT been appointed.

  2. Treasury Secretary Bessent said at the time that the affordability council would select “five or eight areas where this administration can make a big difference for working-class Americans.”

  3. The following areas are where an affordability czar should primarily focus: housing (32.9%), transportation (17%), healthcare (8.4%), and food (12.9%). These four areas represent 71.2% of spending from the average American household.

  4. The affordability czar could make policy recommendations to the White House and Congress, enabling the drafting of executive orders and applicable legislation.

  5. This position would be good political optics as the general public would see an ongoing commitment from the Trump administration to bring down prices.

Unfortunately, this great idea hasn’t come to fruition. Treasury Secretary Bessent has been outstanding, but he is already stretched thin. The seriousness of inflation, both politically and economically, demands a serious response from President Trump. Appointing an affordability czar would be another smart step in the war against inflation.
