A Warning For Republicans
This past Tuesday, November 4th, the MAGA movement and the Trump Administration were repudiated at elections across the country. Unfortunately, Zohran Mamdani, the young, democratic socialist, won the New York City mayoral election. More shockingly, Jay Jones won the attorney general race in Virginia despite his vile text messages wishing death upon an opposition politician’s children. Our side had better realize that we have NOT killed off the poisonous woke ideology.
More to consider:
The election of Zohran Mamdani is concerning because a committed and proud democratic socialist will govern the financial capital of the world. The election of such a radical politician to lead the city most aligned with capitalism is almost unimaginable. While New York City usually leans left, its voters have typically selected centrist pragmatists as mayor, such as Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg.
The election of Jay Jones is truly appalling. The morally bankrupt voters of Virginia decided that a politician desiring the death of his opposition and their children IS NOT disqualifying. The dark implication is simple: a segment of voters in Virginia shares Jay Jones' sentiments about those with whom they disagree.
Jay Jones’ election is all the more distressing in light of Charlie Kirk’s recent assassination and the lionization of Luigi Mangione by some voters. Put another way, the radical base of the Democratic Party is normalizing political violence against standard, MAGA-supporting voters.
Another prominent election went to the Democrats as Mikie Sherrill won the governor’s race in New Jersey. Additionally, many smaller elections, such as those for utility regulators and district attorneys, went to Democrats. And this happened across the country, from Georgia to Pennsylvania to California. In other words, this 2025 Blue Wave was geographically broad and deep (the margins of victory were often significant).
Women, generally and especially younger women, came out strongly against Republican candidates (85% of women aged 18-29 voted for Mamdani). Younger men and Latino voters especially turned against Republicans in most of the elections across the country. These were two demographic areas where President Trump made significant gains in the 2024 election.
As this blog has repeatedly stated, the cost-of-living crisis facing Americans will determine whether Republicans retain control of Congress and whether President Trump’s presidency is seen as a success or a failure. Exit polls from the major races consistently showed that inflation and a slowing economy were the primary issues on voters’ minds. While President Trump has been stellar on foreign policy, more work remains to be done on the domestic front. A successful pivot to the home front and the coming technological boom should hopefully be enough to secure Republican victories in the 2026 midterm elections.
