Weekly Wisdom | The Midterm Strategy

Winning Steps Worth Taking

Congressional Republicans have roughly six months to convince American voters that they deserve to retain their majority in Congress. If the polling is accurate, then President Trump and his congressional allies have a tremendous amount of work ahead of them. If this blog were advising the White House, the message would be clear: go all-in on supporting the working class and delivering results for the MAGA base. Both constituencies are essential to achieving midterm success.

The policies and recommendations this blog would recommend:

  1. End the U.S.-Iran War as swiftly as possible. This is mostly obvious, but a protracted Middle East war could cost hundreds of billions, lead to significant American casualties, and result in a recession due to high energy prices. It would also emphasize in some voters’ minds that the Trump administration isn’t focused on the American people.

  2. Put President Trump in campaign mode. Yesterday, President Trump toured a Thermo Fischer facility in Ohio and then campaigned in Kentucky. Treating President Trump like a candidate will reinvigorate the base while educating voters about the administration's many accomplishments.

  3. Deliver for the base. Many of President Trump’s most ardent supporters want to see deep state accountability and mass deportations. As of now, Attorney General Bondi and FBI Director Patel have been major disappointments. As this blog has pointed out in previous posts, where are the arrests? And regarding immigration, it’s important that the administration follow through and continue to deport all illegal immigrants. While ICE has done a decent job, there are many millions of illegals that need to be deported.

  4. Pass population legislation. Legislation such as the SAVE Act and the Stop Insider Trading Act are popular with 80% of the voting population. Congressional Republicans should be eager to pass laws that even the majority of Democratic voters want.

  5. Aggressively push the MAHA agenda. The MAHA movement is the most popular political movement in America, with majorities in both parties supporting some of its initiatives, such as phasing out glyphosate. President Trump should focus on the top five most important issues to MAHA voters and show that progress is being made quickly. And then use the administration’s excellent social media team to get out the message.

If there is one final point, it is that the White House should be courting Elon Musk to spend $1-2 billion to counter the Democratic donors. Imagine Elon’s wealth combined with a disciplined policy agenda from President Trump and congressional Republicans for the next six months. We can only hope that Republicans and President Trump execute on some of the previous points, because if they don’t, the likelihood of congressional Democratic control will likely become a reality.
